Abstract [en]
Fair trade coffee provides an alternative to the conventional coffee industry. Its principles of paying fair prices to producers and limiting intermediaries provides a competitive offering that is a real solution to the exploitation of farmers in the South. The adoption of fair trade into Northern markets can be measured by the development of fair trade markets around the world. Our purpose is to investigate and compare how the Swedish and French fair trade markets have developed. This investigation was conducted applying a theoretical framework to empirical data. By analysing two markets and focusing on coffee we illustrate how and why key differences can develop. Our foremost conclusions showed that the promotion and distribution of fair trade and its concepts were essential to the development and wider acceptance of fair trade.
