Strong Girls in a Male-Dominated Society:: A study of Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi longstocking and Roald Dahl’s Matilda

Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)
Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this essay has been to investigate how Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking and Dahl’s Matilda go against patriarchal society. by using the theories of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, on the psychosexual stages of development, I have built up my thesis. These theories show that Pippi’s and Matilda’s antagonistic behaviour is due to a neglectful upbringing. My study reveals that the girls challenge male-dominated society by taking on male roles; the girls are for instance their own caretakers. The characters have also been given various boyish features: both girls have supernatural abilities related to physical strength and they use these gifts to scare people. Moreover, Pippi and Matilda disrespect laws and regulations by for example, missbehaving in school and failing to show respect for other authorities in society.
