Eating as Communication -A Feminist Reading of Margaret Atwood's The Edible Woman
Högskolan i Halmstad, Sektionen för humaniora (HUM).
2004 (Engelska)Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]
This essay focuses on Margaret Atwood's first novel The Edible Woman. The Edible Woman explores the confused character of Marian McAlpin who feels trapped both in her career and in her relationship. I will try to point out how social pressure makes the protagonist confused in her feminine role and how she communicates her sense of objectification through eating or non-eating. Marian feels she is being eaten and I will show how she finally takes on individual responsibility for her life and transforms from being consumed into a consumer. Atwood emphasises communication and food metaphors to develop the story and I will try to demonstrate that food is not only fundamental to life but in this case also inseparable from questions of identity, gender and communication.
