Abstract [sv]
Amplifiers are fed by direct current. To create the direct current from alternating current you use a power supply, composed by a transformer, rectifiers and capacitors. The output voltage from the power supply alternates because the amplifier uses up the energy stored in the capacitors, and the energy is only recharged on the peaks of the rectified sinewave. Each time the capacitors are recharged a large current goes through the power supply and creates a magnetic field that produce distortion in adjacent conductors. If you could minimize the alternating on the output voltage of the power supply the current peaks would decline. One way to do this is to change the form of the alternating current that goes in to the power supply, from a sinewave to a squarewave. Then the capacitors will be charged the entire period and no large current flows will be necessary to restore the spent energy.
