The Power and the Bitch: Power Relations in Arthur Miller's The Crucible
Högskolan i Halmstad, Sektionen för humaniora (HUM).
2002 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
Abstract [en]
Arthur Miller's play from 1953, The Crucible, introduces a complicated story about adultery, lies and betrayal, but is also a drama about power. The story takes place in seventeenth century Salem, a Puritan society that allows little power for individuals and even less for women. It is in this environment that a group of young girls decides to dance in the woods and conjure spirits, an act that is strictly forbidden in the religious Salem. This event is the starting-point for a witch-hunt that puts the power relations in the community on edge. Moreover, the leader of the accusations is Abigail Williams, a seventeen-year-old orphan and the rejected lover of a married man, John Proctor. This essay is an analysis of the complicated power relations and power struggles that surface when the devil comes to Salem.
