A sociolinguistic analysis of the language used in Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting
Högskolan i Halmstad, Sektionen för humaniora (HUM).
2001 (engelsk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
Abstract [en]
The focus in this paper will be on the language used in Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting. Not only the accent and dialect of Scottish English, but also how the characters in the novel use their language according to their social status. It becomes clear that since the characters in Trainspotting belong to the so-called lower class, they assert themselves by using a rough language. Slang and taboowords, for example, are common features which indicate their social status. Those features together with the spelling, the grammar and the Old Norse heritage will be investigated in this study.
