Individuals' experiences of living with multiple sclerosis : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoinflammatory disease that affects the central nervous system which leads to neurological symptoms. The disease is individual and therefore is the nurse knowledge and personcentered in nursing of great importance. Purpose: The aim was to describe individuals’ experience of living with multiple sclerosis. Method: A general literature study based on ten articles of qualitative method that was analyzed through a content analysis. The searches were made in the databases CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO. Result: The results divided into three categories: Experience of concern, Experience of frustration and Experience of acceptance. The first category showed that individuals experienced concern at the time of diagnosis, for the future and in social contexts. The second category showed that individuals also experienced frustration due to the fact that MS was an unpredictable disease where symptoms affected the daily life. The third category showed that individuals experienced acceptance of their disease as important in life with MS and therefore took help of individual strategies. Conclusion: To live with MS meant many emotional reactions. MS was an individual disease who complicated the daily life. To optimize nursing care, a broader knowledge and understanding of individuals with MS experiences of the disease is required among nurses.
