Nurses’ experiences of family-witnessed CPR : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

At a cardiac arrest, consciousness is lost within just a few seconds. A cardiac arrest affects the patient, the family and the healthcare professionals. Nurses have a central role in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The central role requires good knowledge of CPR and to provide person-centered care to both patient and family.

The aim of this study was to examine the nurses’ experience of allowing to familywitness ongoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the hospital environment.

Method: The study was designed as a structured literature review with an inductive approach.

The result was created from 14 scientific articles compiled in four categories: feeling responsible, feeling observed, being relieved, creating a relationship.

Conclusion: Stressful working environment, lack of staff, insufficient knowledge, lack of guidelines and narrow spaces in the patient room, contributed to nurses feeling insecure in dealing with family during CPR.
