How the district nurse can identify women with urinary incontinence : An integrative literaturereview (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Urinary incontinence is a broad health issue which causes an extensive social impact and consequences for many individuals. Urinary incontinence is often accompanied by feelings of shame and by social taboo. It has a negative impact on quality of life. Women tend to ignore the symptoms and refrain from seeking medical help because urinary leakage is generally not perceived as an illness. The purpose of this study is to determine how a district nurse can identify women who suffer from urinary incontinence. Detection is crucial in regaining a beneficial health status, both on an individual level as well as on a national health care level. The method applied in this study is a systematically integrated study of literature. Results state a need for information and education, as well as cooperation between multiple health care disciplines and through screening in order to identify women who suffer from urinary incontinence. A broader information flow, guidance and advice from primary care givers is essential in order to decrease the level of taboo. Future research should be aimed at prevention, screening, evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence. A multi-disciplinary work ethic is essential as urinary incontinence is often not the primary reason for medical help seeking, neither is every potentially affected woman by definition being seen by a district nurse. Prevention on a primary care level combined with the education of patients is and will remain a crucial factor as urinary incontinence prevalence increases with age. The phenomenon of a generally increasing overall ageing population within the western world should be taken into account.
