Abstract [en]

By applying Arnold van Gennep’s theory of transitional phases to Jane Eyre this study looks at how the main character, Jane, achieves an identity through death. In the three transitional phases, the phase of separation, the marginal/liminal phase and the phase of the incorporation, it is shown that death is the repetitive transitional marker that acts as the main force in Jane’s identity formation. The analysis falls under the category of new historicism due to the fact that its basis incorporates a wide range of scientific areas such as ethnology, history, anthropology, art history and sociology. Additionally, this study further supports the notion already voiced by Victorian critics that Jane Eyre incorporate secular aspects.
