Abstract [en]

The main point of this essay is to analyse the novel Jane Eyre has been received. The novel was published in 1847 and has since then attracted a large number of readers. Due to its popularity, it has been of great interest for critics but has been to positive as well as negative criticism. My aim has been to comapre reviewers from the Victorian period to those of today. How do they differ in the response to Jane Eyre? To be able to compare the different reviewers more easily, I have chosen a few central aspects that all refer to; the sex of the author, the fact that the novel is defined as an autobiography, the way Jane’s personality affect the institutions of the Victorian society, the views about the plot, the relationship between Jane and Rochester and the influence St.John has on Jane’s life. Since Jane Eyre has been able to create such an interest among lieteray critics throughout the years, it is likely that it will continue to do so in the future as well.
