Abstract [en]
Between 1992 -1994, Bernauer et al. (1996) investigated exotic species in the Rhine River. Based on this information we wanted to explore if there has been a change in species composition since 1992-1994 and to assess drift among invertebrates. To find diurnal or nocturnal drift patterns we performed our investigation during 24 hours at a power- plant located in the Upper Rhine. Being dominated by invasive crustaceans, such as amphipods Corophium curvispinum and Gammarus tigrinus during the years 1992-1994, the river is now dominated by Dikerogammarus villosus, while G. tigrinus is missing. We hypothesized that there would be some new exotic or invasive species in the river, since there has been new canals connected to the river and lots of shipping traffic. Maximum richness of taxa was at midnight and drift density turned out to be high during the evening and started to decline in the morning. We found nocturnal drift patterns of the decapods Atyaephyra desmaresti and the odonata Calopteryx splendens. We also measured their size to find out they have been reproducing. Both species where divided into many different age groups with no connection between time of drift and age.
