A Working Class Subculture and the London Blitz. The wartime behavior of the non-politicised working class.

Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to describe the behaviour of a hitherto marginalised group in wartime London, termed the non-politicised working class. It is a group with a number of specific behavioural features, which are often most visible in times of crisis. A micro-historical approach to the subject is utilised, in an attempt to understand what factors influenced the group’s behaviour in respect to the war and the establishment’s expectations of it. Two case studies, based on interviews, are also made use of to show what the actual consequences of the group’s behaviour and norms could be. Much of the literature used concerns establishment dissatisfaction with the group’s behaviour, and is a reflection of the non-politicised working class’s marginalised position in history. The group’s behaviour during the blitz was directly influenced by its traditions, norms and previous behaviour in the face of crisis.
