Abstract [en]
Vietnam is a socialist country that tentatively has embraced capitalistic ideas into their society during the last decade and a half. The country is still underdeveloped in many senses, not only economically, and many challenges lie ahead. There are many positive signs though, which has made agencies such as the ‘Swedish Trade Council’ alter their opinion positively at the notion of businesses venturing into Vietnamese markets. By being awarded scholarships by Sida to perform a ‘Minor Field Study’, the authors were given the opportunity to explore and research the culture of Vietnam and what views active, western businessmen in Vietnam had on the country, its people and its future. This has resulted in a variety of findings that among other things illustrates the characteristics of the Vietnamese and their behaviour at large. Valuable insights are given as well in how a foreigner should behave and what to expect when living and working in Vietnam. Lastly, the positive vision of Vietnam’s future, which the respondents have conveyed, indicates that the foreign business presence will steadily increase in the future.
