Westernisation and Women in Iran during the Pahlavi Era 1921-1979

2006 (engelsk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
Abstract [en]
This essay is a study of the impact of westernisation upon the Women’s Rights ´movement in Iran during the era of the Pahlavi monarchy. It discusses the effect of the mass adoption of modernising techniques imported from flourishing western democracies on the struggle for equality. This study investigates the possibility that an enforced modernity could have, in reality, affected the women’s rights movement negatively. It is the ambition of this essay, through a chronological examination of the Royal dynasty’s connection with the major western powers, that support will be lent to the theory that, regarding women’s issues, modernisation encouraged marginalisation. Thus it will be argued, paradoxically, a suffocation of the movement for gender equality came about in the midst of an era of vast economic growth, cultural expansion, increased social mobility and a significant reduction in traditional clerical power. Key elements to this study are issues such as: the ways in which and to what degree the West with its secularised modernity influenced the Pahlavi monarchs who in turn, in constant conflict with conservative Islamic clerics, affected the limitations within which women had to live; the world of complicated ever-changing political alliances converging outside Iran’s borders.
