Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the difference between knowing a word in a context and without a context. The first aim is to see if there is any difference in the results if some pupils get the word in a context and some without a context. If there are any differences classes, gender and motivation is used to explain the differences. A second part of the essay is dealing with self-evaluation; the pupils are evaluating their English vocabulary knowledge. Two tests were constructed, one word test and one context test. They consisted of the same 40 words, but in the context test they were put in a sentence. 155 upper secondary school pupils took these tests, 79 pupils took the word test and 76 pupils took the context test. They also answered a questionnaire with some questions that would be interesting for the analysing of the results.
