Linking practice and competition: in figure skating
Högskolan i Halmstad, Sektionen för hälsa och samhälle (HOS).
2004 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
Abstract [en]
The aims of this study were 1) to describe how fifteen Danish competitive figure skaters perceive the regimes (external/internal conditions) of; a) ordinary practice; b) pre-competition practice followed by successful performance; c) pre--competition practice followed by poor performance; d) successful competition performance; e) poor competition performance, with an identification of variours factors influencing performance in competition, 2) to explore how external and internal simulation training can affect competition performance of a fourteen years old competitive figure skater. The questionnaire survey ‘Practice and Competition in Figure Skating’ with quantitative and qualitative parts was employed in group-oriented design for the explorative study and with a practical and applied purpose for the intervention case study. Results of the explorative study showed a) twelve factors perceived as very much/much influential for competition performance, b) increasing discrepancy between perceived regime of ordinary practice, pre-competition practice, and competition performance with dominance of perceived positive changes related to successful competition performance and negative changes related to poor competition performance. The intervention case study assessed both objectively an subjectively, confirmed the worth of individualised simulation training program, which improved the perceived overlap between practice and competition, training variability, and performance. Based on the two studies recommendations are given to make practice and competition of figure skaters more effective.
