Abstract [sv]
Nine 2-tier suppliers in the Swedish car industry are examined in order to find out their strategic response to the requirements and trends in the Swedish car industry. The paper is based upon a theoretical framework that is analyzed and compared with the empirical data from the interviews. The purpose is to find a pattern regarding the suppliers’ strategic responses and which requirements and trends they experience, but also to find out differences between the theoretical framework and the empirical data. The result shows on an obvious pattern where the suppliers tend to concentrate their strategic response on technical specialization. With the technical specialization as a base the suppliers further concentrates their strategic response towards production skills, function knowledge, material skills and the ability to act in networks. The most obvious requirements that they see is a constant price reduction, high demands regarding quality and precision in delivery, in-house product development and geographical nearness to the customer. The research available is very much applicable in the context of the 2-tier supplier of the Swedish car industry.
