Abstract [en]
Almost every sixteen-year- old boy or a girl enter the upper secondary school, but not all of them fell motivated to study. This is a survey made at the upper secondary school concerning motivation for studying English among students on the vocational programmes. The aim of this study was to obtain more knowledge of what factors might have an influence on motivation and to find means how to achieve a higher degree of motivation in the English classroom among these students. The procedure used to obtain information from the real situation of everyday life in school today has been to hand out questionnaires. Both teachers teaching on the vocational programmes and students on these programmes have taken part in this study. The empirical studies performed show the importance of a co-operation between the core and vocational subjects. This was among both students and teachers considered as essential. Small classes and interesting material dealing with the future occupation of the students were other factors mentioned likely to have an effect on the degree of motivation. All participants in this survey were aware of the importance of these factors mentioned, but found them, due to different circumstances, not always easy to fulfill.
