Abstract [en]
Aim. To prospectively determine women´s self-rated health after a fisrt myocardial infarction from a comprehensive perspective of recovery over a 4-year period. Background. Little attention has been focused on women´s long-term follows-ups, especially from a comprehensive perspektive. Previous studies have shown that there is an association between inactivity and increased cardiovascular risk and those social aspects of life, high hostility and low social support are assosiated with some manifestations of coronary heart disease. Methods. Two hundred and forty consecutively chosen women suffering their first myocardial infarction were asked to complete a self-rated questionnaire regarding health before being discharged from the hospital as well as one-year and four years later. The results were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results. Diet consciousness, exercise, simultaneous capability and smoking beahvior showed positive changes in terms of women´s lifestyle. Emotional support from the family and a trusted friend, with whom the women could share their innermost thougts, decreased during the 4-yar period, while nursing staff increased their support over time as well as treating the woman´s compaints more seriously. Regarding the work situation, the women felt being more controlled 4 years after the myocardial infarction than at the time of the myocardial infarction. Conclusions. Based on a comprehensive perspective including the behavioral factors: diet, exercise, simultaneous capability and smoking, it was found that the women had been able to implement changes in lifestyle behavior necessary for improved health. Over the 4-year period, the emotional factors show a decrease in depressed mood and critical life events as well as an increase in the level of control of one´s own life. Over the same period, the social factors show that nursing staff trates the women´s compaints more seriously as well as increasing their proffesional support. Finally, the work-related factors show that more women felt being controlled at work.
