Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is to describe youth basket coaches views on team cohesion, from four aspects: definition of team cohesion, the importance of team cohesion, strategies to create team cohesion, and finally strategies to maintain cohesion. The study is qualitative, and consist of semi-stuctured interviews with youth basket coaches. The study group (N=10) were four females and six males, ages 22 to 52 years (m=31,9), all with at least one years experience of youth basketball coaching. The interview guide consisted of four questions; one major question on each of four aspects on team cohesion. All interviews were taped, answers were categorised into the four aspects of team cohesion. The result shows that youth basketball coaches defined team cohesion as a continuos process, striving towards a common goal, having fun and feeling secure. The coached regard team cohesion as very important for the team to function properly. The most common strategy to achieve team cohesion is to give players responsibility, and to perform activities outside basketball. Strategies to maintain team cohesion include camp and making new players feel welcome. The conclusion is drawn that more well-structed team- building strategies amongst youth coaches is needed.
