Abstract [en]

This essay is a biographical and deconstructive analysis of selected lyrics taken from Tracy Chapman´s foru albums (1988-1996). She is an African-American singer/songwriter known as a “folk-singer” because of her concern for the disentranchised people and political causes. The analysis is arranged chronologically and thematically in order to show how Chapman battles with and redefines her message over the years. It discusses the issues of poverty and greed, and knowing where to draw the line not to become corrupt and lose your soul. The essay also includes a short history of the African-American people, a passage introducing Tracy Chapman and finally, an appendix containing all the discussed lyrics.
