This essay investigates how metaphors have evolved from being viewed merely as a tool in poetry into a given part of the English language. To view the historical changes, it is necessary to initially examine what a metaphor truly is. It must be understood that there are different kinds of metaphors depending on concrete and abstract concepts. When it is established what a metaphor is, it is important to view the incremental and fundamental changes that occur. The changes vary due to the culture, and it is exemplified by the concept of time. Furthermore, an issue to be investigated is the importance of teaching metaphors in education to increase the language learning process for L2 (second language) learners.
