Abstract [en]

Digital media permeate people's lives and affect society. A particularly important group in the society is young people, because they are the first generations that have grown up with digital media and chat usage. The target group in this study consists of both young (12-20 years) and adult (39-60). The purpose of this study is to investigate the interaction between online and offline chat communication by young people and adults, as well as we aim to investigate the differences and similarities between these groups regarding chat usage.

Previous research in this field of research addresses the experience of communication online as well as age and morale. Two selected theories are symbolic interactionism and generation theory; these describe concepts of social interaction, social order, generation as well as identity. The method used in this study is a qualitative survey in the form of interviews. In total, eight interviews were managed, whereof four were with young and four with adult respondents. The results show that young people and adults generally experience chat as a fast and easy way of communication. The difference found in the outcome is that young people see the chat more like a natural way of communication. Unlike adults who consider chatting as a like a communication tool.
