The enlightening of gender expressions in the practice of handball : - from a culture sociological and symbolic interaction perspective. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Girls and boys play sports according to several different studies for various reasons; girls play sports for social reasons while boys play sports for reasons which are associated with achievement. Notions of masculinity and femininity thus affect how boys and girls are educated both in the sporting arena and the rest of their lives. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to study the gender expression that is made visible through the social interactions of boys’ teams and girls’ teams in handball. Thus the aim is also to highlight the possible consequences of different gender expression contributes to within two handball practitioners. METHOD: A field study was conducted in which a total of four observations were made in two handball teams - one boys' team and one girls' team, where players were born in 1998 and 1999. The observations were divided into two pieces during the match and two during training. RESULTS: The results of the study show that players in the girls' team and the boys' team uses different gender expression in social interaction. Gender expressions used by boys and girls are influenced by the beliefs that are about how boys and girls should be in a sporting arena. Gender expressions also show that the girls' team and the boys' team are within two different practices, where different gender expression gives rise to various terms and conditions of the extension. IMPLICATION: Further research can tentatively be studying how to proceed in order to get the sport more equal, to create equal conditions to get both boys, men, girls and women playing sports under the same principles, but that gender differences must be what puts primary character within contexts.
