Abstract [en]
A long-term study of breeding moor frogs, Rana arvalis, in south-central Sweden allowed annual variations in the population ecology of the species to be examined. The breeding population size fluctuated among years, ranging from 49 to 1974 individuals. The size of the population did not influence either the sex ratio or the body size among individuals breeding for the first time. The body size for first time breeders differed significantly between years but not between the sexes. Body size seemed to influence the ability to survive for both males and females since individuals returning to breed in consecutive years were larger as first time breeders than the individuals that did not return. Analysis of survival using computer software MARK revealed differences between both years and the sexes. Male survival averaged 42%, ranging between years from 25-74% while corresponding values for the females were 21%, ranging from 5-34%.
