I'm Not the Man You Think I Am: Sexual Ambiguity, Child Abuse and the Songs of the Smiths.
Halmstad University, School of Teacher Education (LUT).
2005 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
This paper is a study of a number of songs by early 1980's English pop group the Smiths, intended to investigate the widely publicised claim that a number of their lyrics condoned the sexual abuse of children. The main method of analysis used is listener response, with some direct comparisons to other artists’ songs also being utilised. The artists used for comparison are in many ways similar to the Smiths, not only artistically, but also in the way they were received by critics and fans. This allows an opinion to be formed as to whether the songs in question did promote the sexual abuse of children, but also on the wider issue of just what constitutes pop music. The conclusion states that it was more the public image of singer Morrissey that caused the allegations, rather than the lyrical content on its own.
