An Investigation of How Idioms Have Been Translated in: The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2001 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The essay is investigating the translation of idioms in Douglas Adams' The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and by that attempting to identify what possible problems the translator might have encountered when dealing with the idioms, which translation strategy the translator has chosen, and, finally, if the Swedish version has suffered from any losses in meaning or humour due to any misses the translator has made, or due to the specific translating technique he has chosen for the particular idiom. The results show that for some of the idioms the Swedish version has suffered from losses in meaning and humour. The translator has also chosen not to take too much trouble when translating, using only one translating strategy, which has also resulted in losses. The problem the translator was most likely to encounter was the lack of a Swedish equivalent of the source language idiom.
