Abstract [sv]
The care of patients in hospital at night is an important issue. The aim of this study was to shed light on the nurse and patient perspectives at night watch. Results indicates that patients don`t get enough sleep when admitted to hospital. Nurses and patients have differant views of the hospital ward and disturbing factors during the night. Nurses seem to have different levels of knowledgement concerning the importance for patients to have a good night sleep. Professional care need to be provided not only by using the medical approach but also alternative methods. The atmosphere at night differs in many ways, both routines and the fact that a patient is more alone. One important finding was that nurse find more time available for conversation during the night watch. Nurses working nights work more independently and with a high responsibility for the patient care and outcome of treatment at night. Development and research showed improved routines and documentaion with a professional patient approach also at night. It´s important to view caring as a 24 hours task where night and day is equal in the eyes of every professional nurse, and how patients are provided for.
