Abstract [en]

This paper is based on observations and interviews with six teenage girls (age 14–16) currently highly active in a Swedish riding school. Riding is one of the most popular sporting activities among girls in Sweden and riding schools receive financial support from the government to make riding available to everyone. The aim of this paper is to explore how teenage girls construct their gender identity at the stable through the handling of horses and related work in their leisure time. Theoretically, we employ Butler’s (1999) theory of identity, based on social constructivism. The relationships with the horses, the hard work, the unexpected challenges, as well as the friendships among the girls, were found to be essential elements of the stable experience. At the stable, the girls learned to take action, handle risks and take the lead. This created an alternative way of enacting themselves as young females, resulting in an identity based on being independent, competent and powerful. As such, the riding school represents a developmental space where teenage girls can prepare themselves for their future, independent, lives. © 2011 World Leisure Organization.

Abstract [en]

This paper presents a longitudinal study of sports girls, at the ages of 12, 14 and 19. The aim of this paper is to investigate what engagement in sport during teenage meant for the girls’ conception of their own selves, how sports involvement influenced their self-image and how they handled the dual experience of having a female and a sports body. The girls received feedback confirming their identity as sports girls through their performances and significant others. This resulted in a disciplined body and preparedness to train hard. Looks and physique became important for their self-image when they successively became aware of and negotiated the significance of their gendered bodies. After leaving the club they chose activities considered more feminine. In this way they could maintain their identity as sports girls and at the same time abide by the heterosexual norms. The physically controlled body was a fundamental part in the process of constructing and reconstructing a coherent self.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The project is directed at youth workers and leaders working with young people (13-20 years old) in leisure time activities in the public sector, youth clubs or NGO’s. The idea was to provide youth workers and other adults working with young people appropriate means to get young people participate in decision making processes and support their integration into the society. The goal is to strengthen the position of the young people on the labour market and to support their active citizenship. The aim of the project was to produce a tool kit for a two days training programme run in the way the youth workers should work with the young people. The way the tool kit is implemented is intended to become a model for vocational training for youth workers.

Abstract [sv]

nationella utvärderingen omfattar deltagande i ITiS under perioden Ht 1999 t.o.m. Ht 2001.

2004).

Abstract [en]

This paper presents some results within Pedatronics; a fusion between pedagogics and mechatronics. Our research interest is to study what emerges in the play with robotic toys. Field-experimental studies of 67 year old children’s purposeless play with robotic toys created a self-developmental sphere, as well as evoked young girl’s technological interest. Both girls and boys prolonged and intensified their interest according to the amount of gadgets involved. The results disclose a learning potential, indicating the importance to develop strategies at an early stage in order to encourage girls to choose technological and engineering educations. The study recommend engineers and toy designers, in cooperation with children, to move towards ’Integrated Play Systems’. Due to an ethological method, the results differ from other studies of children’s play with technological advanced artefacts. © 2002 IEEE

Abstract [en]

Teenagers do not join voluntary organisations except for sport-clubs, and show little interest in politics, which have worried the Swedish, government. Community-clubs are attractive as they offer a meeting-place without any adult, where something unexpected and exciting may happen. The idea of the club, however, is to discipline. Teenagers should be active and socialised into democratic behaviour and norms, hence democratic procedures are used for them to run the club themselves. It might also offer a scene for individual modes of expression and collective protest. Modern life seems to give unlimited possibility of creating one's identity and future expressed in symbols from different cultures and with a focus on leisure activities. This paper is based on interviews with teenagers at community clubs, specially focusing girls, with the aim of showing the role of the club in their socialisation. There seems to be a potential for mainstream youngsters to participate in alternative democratic activities at the club. This public scene is of special importance to girls.

Abstract [en]

This paper discusses the significance of sports participation among girls at adolescence. The empirical study consisted of two complete sports teams (sports gymnastics and football) of 26 female-athletes. The girls were interviewed on four occasions between the ages of 12 and 19. The girls’ participation is described in an interactionist perspective as a socialisation process, which included learning the language, rules and norms of sport as well as creating an image of themselves as sports girls. Being more involved they realised the discrepancy between the norms of sport and their view of themselves as young females. They handled this discrepancy in different ways by either adopting the sports norms, behaving playful in relation to their sport or by choosing a less regulated activity. This should be seen as conscious choices. The girls were positioning themselves as physical active females within the cultural and ideological context of the contemporary social world.
